In the challengingly hellish period of World War II and its aftermath, Italy made its greatest contribution to the art of cinema: il Neorealismo .This innovative, crudeand eye-opening presentation of reality was the first postwar film movement todiscard past conventions and studio production techniques simply because of the impoverished state of the industry and the country; additionally, its proponents were obsessed with the over-powering need to show the world a new and truer reality.
Despite its broad international influence, in the early 1950s in Italy, Neorealism started to gradually morph as a well-defined movement. Despite the cries of some hardcore adherents to this school of socio-political cinema, Italian film nevertheless continued to grow in esteem and popularity through the works of a
young generation of highly talented, visionary directors who had begun their careers as Neorealists.
The early 1950s were truly glory years for Roberto Rossellini, Federico Fellini, and Vittorio De Sica, among many other Italian directors. Each of these
filmmakers possessed a unique vision and personal characteristics not to be found in others. Their cinematic focus was on the dynamics of daily existence and the human drama, yet they were also attentive to the socio-historical circumstances of their characters and the world-at-large, and the settings in which their stories took place.
