*This is a 4 part Italian Film Study Course (March 5th, March 19th, April 2nd, April 16th). Registration fee includes all four films/classes, Tasting of regional foods, wine and coffee. Classes MAY NOT be purchased separately.


   In the mid-1950s, classic Italian filmmaking - now in the spotlight of world cinema - was largely distinguished by a gradual transition away from the unadorned but socially conscious realism of the post-war Neorealist movement. The exhaustive rebuilding of the nation and consequent economic growth led to a rejection of films obsessed with the people’s misery. The attention of filmmakers shifted to individuals caught up in existential questions and their own inner drama. Italian cineastes once again were determined and ready to raise the artistic bar. The auspicious arrival of such groundbreaking directors like Federico Fellini and Michelangelo Antonioni signaled an innovative and daring direction towards a more complex cinema.
